Senior Selection Policy 2025/26
Our Commitment
Our Club supports an open and transparent process for the selection of teams. Selection will be based on clear criteria that are communicated to the player and/or playing group as required or requested.
Selection Committee
The Selection Committee will comprise of the following people:
Senior coach
Club Captain
Committee-elected member acting as Chairperson
Selection criteria
Players must be financial (as determined by the Club Committee, or it’s representative, based on individual circumstances).
Conduct of the player during matches, training, Club functions and social media.
Match day performance – both on and off the field.
Training attendance, participation and attitude.
Attendance at Club functions.
Process
The Selection Committee shall select preliminary teams on Monday and Tuesday before Senior training via email or any other method of communication deemed appropriate.
The Selection Committee shall consult with the Captains and other appropriate people (e.g. First XI scorer or spectator who attends a majority of matches) in determining the current form and attitude of players prior to formalising the teams.
Selection of teams shall be made to create balanced, competitive teams across all grades with the best possible chance of winning.
While the ideal situation is to swap “like for like” players, we recognise there are times where this is not possible.
Any players who have been dropped or not selected will be told of the reason before teams are announced and provided with constructive feedback (provided they are at training on that day).
In the event that we do not have enough players to fill all senior teams, we will ask the help of the entire playing group to contact the friends or past and potential future players to fill the sides.
a. If the event that the lowest grade does not have eleven players, we may shuffle players to have a more even number of players in each team. For example, the Third XI may lose a player to the Fourth XI so that each grade has 10 players. The relative positions and opposition shall be considered when making this decision. For example, if the Third XI is pushing for a finals berth and the Fourth XI is towards the bottom of the ladder, the Third XI will have eleven players and the Fourth XI will have nine players.
The Chairperson (or their proxy; see Unavailability of a Member of the Selection Committee below) shall have the power of veto over the selection of any player based on the Selection Criteria listed above.
Announcing teams
Teams will be announced in the Harper’s Field clubrooms, or any other venue deemed appropriate, after Thursday night training.
Teams will also be published on the Club web site and applicable social media (including the Club’s smart phone app).
Unavailability of a member of the Selection Committee
In the event that the Chairperson is unavailable for a period of two weeks or more, the Club Committee shall appoint a Club Committee member as temporary replacement to allow selection to proceed as per this policy. This person shall have the power of veto as afforded to the Chairperson (as per item 7 of Process above).
If the Senior Coach or Club Captain becomes unavailable for a period of two weeks or more, the SCD shall appoint a temporary replacement to allow selection to proceed as per this policy.
Grievances
Concerns about team selection should be discussed with the Selection Committee in the first instance. A formal written complaint to the Club Committee should be made if these concerns cannot be resolved and the player believes he/she has not been treated in accordance with the selection criteria.
